AV Dissociation

3 Causes:

  1. Usurpation
    • P waves transiently do not conduct because of an accelerated junctional rhythm that takes over
  2. AV dissociation by default
    • a junctional escape rhythm takes over by “default” (ie, because of SA node slowing)
    • e.g. beta blocker use
  3. AV heart block
    • IF P waves fail to conduct despite having adequate opportunity to do so
